Promises: The Most Important Issue of Our Lives

Promise a lot and deliver more.

If one advances confidently in the directions of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours – Henry David Thoreau. The idea of promising a lot and delivering much more is easily the most important issue in our lives. Make promises very carefully. Make sure you can deliver. If you promise a client something, do it.

Many people promise a lot and deliver very little or nothing at all. Others promise a lot and deliver something mediocre. My philosophy is to promise a lot and deliver even more than you promised.

If you promise to give clients a certain level of service annually, do it quarterly. If you promise to call them by Thursday, call them by Wednesday. If you promise to be there by 9:00 am, be there by 8:45.

You offer a certain level of service to clients. It is your promise. Make sure you deliver on that promise, no matter what. If for some reason something goes wrong – and things do go wrong at times – be sure to make up for it to your client. Call the client in advance to explain what went wrong. Apologize so that the client knows it's an accident. Let your client know what happened was the exception, not the rule.

Delivering on your promises is an incredibly important part of the sales process. You promise a lot, now deliver more.

What you tell the client you are going to do, you must do. You must do it in spades. But you must do more than you promised, because that is what builds reputation.

The prospect must believe that you care so much that you are willing – even happy to provide more than you promised. If you told your client a policy's cash value in 20 years would be $100,000 when it really would be $110,000, that's wonderful!

If you said that the policy would vanish in eight years and it vanishes in seven, that's wonderful!

If you said that you would deliver something in two weeks, and you deliver in a week and a half, that's even better!

Promise a lot and deliver more!
