Energy Sells!

by Jeff Keller

I was watching the Larry King show years ago and his guest was a guy named Matthew Lesko. He has written books about how to get information and, in some cases, merchandise from the government at little or no cost.

His are well‑researched, valuable books. But, let me assure you that most people wouldn't be too excited about Lesko's topics. He covers such things as how to tap into the "Glaciology Data Base" (everything you wanted to know about snow and ice) and how to contact the Federal Grain Inspection Service.

I'd venture to say that if ten people started a conversation with you on the material in these books, nine of them would put you to sleep. But not Lesko. His arms are flailing, his eyes are sparkling he's so hyper that you can't help but laugh as you watch him. And he can't wait to tell you more and more about the fantastic things in his books.

And, you know what? After a while, you begin to believe that you really DO need to buy his books!

Why on earth is Matthew Lesko so convincing and so interesting to watch? It's his energy. He's incredibly dynamic and enthusiastic. And energy sells!

Energy sells not only when you're trying to persuade someone to buy your product or service. It also sells when it comes to interpersonal relationships. Let's say you're sitting at a table having dinner with a few people that you've never met before. You look to your left and see someone who, in your opinion, is physically attractive. You look to your right and see another person who is "average" looking.

Then, the dinner conversation begins. As it turns out, the "attractive" person has a very dull personality and shows very little energy. The "average" person speaks very enthusiastically about his or her career and travel experiences. You are captivated and enthralled. After the evening, aren't you going to see the "average" person as being much more attractive than you originally thought ... and the "attractive" person being much less so? Of course.

When you're energetic, you'll gain these benefits:

[ ]

People will want to be around you.

[ ]

People will be more receptive to your ideas.

[ ]

People will be more likely to buy your product or service.

I think we can all tap into a vast supply of energy hidden within ourselves and here are some guidelines to help you do just that:

Follow your passion. The number one factor in harnessing your energy is to get involved doing things that you love to do. Ideally, you should work in a field that really excites you and makes you look forward to going to work each day. Now, I'm not telling you that you have to quit your job if you don't like your current position or line of work. But, it's crucial that you find some outlet, even if it's a hobby, where you can engage in activities that get your juices going. If you fill your days with boring activities or drudgery, you are cutting off your energy.

Become more animated. Movement is magical. If you watch young children, they are very animated and excited. Over the years, however, we learn to suppress our natural exuberance. When that happens, our energy is reduced. So, loosen up and don't be rigid when expressing yourself with others. Let your enthusiasm shine through.

Laugh! Humor is a great energizer. So, when someone says something funny, don't be afraid to laugh. Likewise, don't hide your natural sense of humor. Nearly everyone responds well to laughter and it will make you feel better and more energized.

Do it your own way. Becoming more energetic doesn't mean you have to be hyper! You can develop your own kind of energy. Those of you who know me are aware that I'm not a screaming, "slap you on the back" kind of guy! So, you don't have to be loud to be energetic. Now, the truth is, when you develop more energy and charisma, you will change in some ways. But, in most instances, you will not completely abandon your original personality.

Maintain your physical health. This one is fairly self‑explanatory. If you have poor eating habits, get insufficient rest and don't exercise, it should come as no shock to you when you have little energy. You must take care of yourself physically to maximize your energy.

So, do you want people to respond more favorably to your ideas ... and to your sales presentations? If so, follow the energy boosters described above, and you'll find that more and more people will be sold on YOU!
