Response-Ability

by Jim  Meisenheimer

The World Trade Center is downed.

The stock market tumbles.

People all over the world are rattled.

If you're in sales or sales management, you have a responsibility. (response-ability)

YES, you have the ability to respond.

Our country will rebuild and rebound.  And, it will be done in part on the shoulders of salespeople.

Now more than ever, it's time to think big and sell your socks off.

Here's a list of ten things you can do to sharpen your focus and improve your performance.

1. If you don't own a U.S. Flag, go out and buy one.  Begin every day by raising it. As you raise the flag set lofty goals for yourself every day.

2. Prepare all personal and professional goals in writing.  Look at them daily.  Goal focused people aren't bothered by distractions because they're too busy achieving their goals.

3. Begin every business day with a written list of priorities and stick to them. Hooks and loops make Velcro stick.  Goals and priorities make salespeople successful.

4. To achieve a higher level of self-development set aside 15 minutes everyday to read books and to listen to tapes.  Not all street smarts come from the street.  You'd be amazed how books and tapes influence personal growth.

5. Prepare written sales call objectives for every sales call.  If the call has a purpose, it should have a written objective.

6. Be a winner not a whiner.  Avoid hanging out with people who are down. The quickest way up is to be looking up.  Hang out with people who are optimistic today and especially those with unbelievable positive attitudes.

7. Forget about just making your quota.  Plan on exceeding it.  Good plans aren't improvised they are executed.  You can't execute something that hasn't been prepared in writing.

8. If your industry has been hit hard by recent events, don't participate in the sewer talk.  Let the moaners moan.  Go find the opportunities that do exist and work them until you close them.

9. Tough people always figure out a way to deal with tough times.  Be tough. You can do anything you set out to do.  Say this 25 times a day "Everyday, in every way, I'm getting better and better."

10. If there is someone in your family you've been thinking about calling or hugging - don't wait.

The mantra we're all hearing is "Go about your business." Do go about your business.  But don't make it business as usual. Rededicate yourself to the art of selling and raise your own bar as you raise your country's flag each day - then go about your business.

America needs all salespeople to do their part to get this economy rolling again.
