Term:

Outlier

Definition:

Atypical data occurring at the tails of a normal distribution. Frequently outliers are removed to minimize their effects. For example, in research where 300 interviews are conducted and 299 respondents buy less than five times a week, the one respondent who is purchasing 30 times a week may be removed to suppress his excessive weight in measures of central tendency such as means or averages.
