| Definition: | Randomized response is a technique which allows for accurate measurement of responses to embarrassing questions, by disguising responses at the individual level but retaining their accuracy at the aggregate level. Respondents are asked to think of a number between 1 and 100, and are told to consider the numbers from 1 to X (for example) as ‘positive’ and the numbers from X+! to 100 as ‘negative.’ They respond to the question by simply indicating whether their true response to the embarrassing question agrees with the valence of the number they made up or not.
